The United Way will forward your donations to us. People often participate in the United Way's workplace campaigns, but don't always know where to direct their donation. This is a great way to get donations from family, friends and co-workers through United Way campaigns at their places of work. Please contact your local chapter. |

We are registered with eBay's charity auction list through its Mission Fish program. Any registered eBay user can list items and donate between 20% and 100% of the proceeds from the sale to the 22q13 Deletion Foundation. Mission Fish collects the money, issues a receipt and the donations are tax deductible.
You can find our Support Group by going to eBay's home page and clicking on the "Giving Works" link. Then, scroll down to the "Shop by Nonprofits" section. Next, click on "Search the Directory" or the "#" symbol to find our group. Finally, click on "22q13 Deletion Foundation" to find items that are for sale and will benefit our group. |

The Center has been instrumental in the formation of the 22q13 Deletion Syndrome / Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Support Group and continues to provide help and guidance to our families and our organization.
Birth defects do not discriminate; mental retardation, neural tube defects, autism, and other diverse conditions commonly surface at every level of our society and in every community.
Since its founding in 1974, the Greenwood Genetic Center has been a leader in the delivery of genetic services, committed to:
- Diagnosing genetic conditions.
- Counseling individuals and families.
- Researching the causes of birth defects and genetic diseases.
- Educating health care providers, teachers, and the public about genetics.
Each year more than 10,000 families from South Carolina and other states receive clinical and laboratory services through Greenwood. Clinical evaluations are provided at the main facility in Greenwood and at permanent satellite offices in Greenville and Columbia, as well as through outreach clinics across South Carolina. Geneticists, genetic counselors and caseworkers work with state agencies, hospitals and other organizations to make genetic services available to as many families as possible.

The Foundation has been extremely generous in its financial support of our biennial meetings in the past. For this we will be forever grateful. Thank you, Bill and Carol.
The Mikel Foundation is a public charity organization founded in 1997 for the purpose of helping children and families of children with genetic disorders. The Foundation provides money for the private purchase of wheelchairs, orthotics, gait trainers and various other types of adaptive equipment, as well as for genetic research. Often the purchase of such equipment poses a financial burden to families, since many of these expenditures are not covered under a familys insurance plan or the remaining co-payment exceeds a familys budget or abilities.

Services:
The Mikel Foundation provides money for the private purchase of various types of adaptive equipment for children with genetic disorders, as well as funding for genetic research.
Adaptive Equipment:
Since 1997, The Mikel Foundation has helped as many families as possible through individual grant giving. The types of grants are varied and include items such as wheelchairs, gait trainers, adaptive bicycles, special needs camp tuition, leg braces, and hearing aids. Often, grant recipients would not otherwise receive the vital equipment necessary to enhance their quality of life. The Foundation is constantly exploring new avenues to reach families with critical needs and offer financial assistance.
Research Funding:
In addition to individual family grants, The Mikel Foundation has also funded several grants to research and non-profit organizations. Each year since 1997, a substantial grant has been made to the Greenwood Genetic Center in Greenwood, SC. Two such grants were made for the purchase of equipment used in genetic diagnoses and analysis. Two other grants were made for the purpose of hosting symposiums for families with children with chromosome 22 deletions. At those meetings, families discussed genetic similarities and differences in their children, attended clinics and lectures and formed a lifelong support network for their families. The Mikel Foundation also funded a grant to PAGER, an association dedicated to helping children with reflux. This grant was made to host a symposium in November 1999 for families affected by the disease.
Support:
The Mikel Foundation hosts two annual fundraisers. One is a charity golf tournament at a Washington, D.C. area golf course. The other is a gala dinner dance featuring live and silent auctions. In past years, this event has been held at Bethesda Country Club or the Strathmore Arts Center. This year, 2005, The Mikel Foundation is also planning a fund-raising event for October in Charleston, South Carolina. In addition to these events, The Foundation also raises money through direct mail solicitations.
